Stepping Into the Unknown: How a 3-Day Mastermind Changed My Life

There’s a quote that’s been echoing in my mind lately: “ You are the sum (or average) of the five people you spend the most time with.” - Jim Rohn

It’s a simple idea, but it took on a whole new meaning for me after I attended a 3-day immersion mastermind with people I’d never met before.

Why I Took the Leap

Trying something new as an adult is *scary*. We get used to our routines, our circles, and the comfort of the familiar. But deep down, I knew that if I wanted to grow, I needed to surround myself with people who were already doing what I aspired to do. So, I signed up for a mastermind retreat, knowing only that the other attendees were successful in the field I wanted to break into.

The Beauty of Diversity: So Different, Yet So Connected

What made this mastermind truly transformational was the incredible diversity of the group. We came from all corners of the world-Taiwan, Sweden, the UK, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, and the United States. Our ages ranged from 19 to 53. Each person brought a unique perspective shaped by different cultures, life experiences, and backgrounds.

This diversity wasn’t just a statistic; it was the secret sauce that made the experience so rich. Hearing how people from such varied walks of life approached challenges and opportunities created countless “ah-ha” moments. It expanded my thinking, helped me uncover blind spots I didn’t know I had, and showed me the power of looking at problems through different lenses. This mix of perspectives created a dynamic environment where fresh ideas flourished and real breakthroughs happened.

The Discomfort of Growth

Walking into that room on the first day, I felt like a fish out of water and I questioned whether I belonged there. But as the hours ticked by, I realized that everyone had once been exactly where I was-uncertain, nervous, and hungry to learn.

The discomfort didn’t magically disappear, but I started to see it as a sign that I was stretching beyond my comfort zone. Growth, I learned, is rarely comfortable.

What I Learned

Over those three days, I absorbed more than I thought possible-not just about the industry, but about myself. I learned:

  • The power of proximity: Being around individuals with such diverse backgrounds changed my perspective on what’s possible. The energy was contagious.

  • Vulnerability is strength: Admitting what I didn’t know and asking questions opened the door to genuine connections and real learning.

  • Transformation happens at the edge: The moments I felt most uncomfortable were the moments I grew the most.

The Aftermath: A New Sum

As I left the mastermind, I realized that the quote was true-I was already becoming the sum of these inspiring people. Their drive and wisdom had rubbed off on me. I felt empowered to take action, to dream bigger, and to keep seeking out circles that challenge and uplift me.

Final Thoughts

If you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, consider who you’re spending your time with. Sometimes, transformation requires stepping into the unknown, even if it’s scary. Trust me-the discomfort is worth it. You never know how much you can grow until you surround yourself with people who inspire you to be your best self.
